English & Welsh figures include an area-average parish/community precept; Scottish figures exclude water and sewerage (set by Scottish Water), so a real Scottish bill is higher than shown. Band D is the official published figure; Band D is derived from the statutory proportions (Local Government Finance Act 1992, s.5; Scottish E–H per SSI 2016/368) and rounded to the nearest pound. Rates last verified 4 July 2026.

Methodology and sources

Band D figures for all 350 UK billing authorities are parsed from the official machine-readable 2026/27 releases, and nothing is hand-typed. Band D is derived by multiplying each council's Band D by the statutory proportion for that band: in England and Wales the ladder runs 6/9 (Band A) to 18/9 (Band H); Scotland keeps 6/9–9/9 for A–D but uses raised multipliers for E–H (Band E is 473/360 of Band D, Band H 882/360) from April 2017. All sources are published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Rates last verified 4 July 2026; re-ingested each April.

Band D council tax: FAQ

How much is Band D council tax in 2026/27?
It depends on the council. Across 350 UK councils the average Band D charge for 2026/27 is £2,337, ranging from £1,028 (Wandsworth) to £2,765 (Dorset). Band D is a fixed statutory fraction of each council's Band D charge, and the full ranked table is on this page. Sources: MHCLG, Welsh Government and Scottish Government 2026/27 releases (OGL v3.0).
How is Band D worked out?
Councils publish one number, the Band D charge, and every other band is a fixed proportion of it, set in law. In England and Wales Band D is 9/9 (Band D itself) of Band D (Local Government Finance Act 1992, s.5). Scotland uses the same A–D ladder but higher E–H multipliers since April 2017 (SSI 2016/368), so Scottish Band E–H charges here use those raised proportions.
What band is my house? Is it Band D?
This page can't tell you your band, and no postcode tool can honestly. A specific home's band is on the official register: the VOA's 'Check your Council Tax band' service (England and Wales) or the Scottish Assessors portal (Scotland), both free. This page shows what Band D costs in each council once you know the band.
Are these figures directly comparable between councils?
Broadly, with two caveats. English and Welsh figures include an area-average parish or community precept, so an individual bill varies slightly by parish. Scottish figures exclude water and sewerage charges, which are added to the same bill by Scottish Water, so a real Scottish bill is higher than the figure shown. The ranking is indicative rather than perfectly like-for-like.
