Council Tax Bands & Rates 2026/27 — Every UK Council

The full A–H charge tables (A–I in Wales) for all 350 UK billing authorities, built from the official 2026/27 releases by MHCLG, the Welsh Government and the Scottish Government. Browse rates here; for the bands in a specific postcode use the council tax checker, and for a home's exact band go straight to the official VOA register.

2026/27 at a glance

For 2026/27, the unweighted average Band D council tax is £2,411 across England's 296 billing authorities, £2,326 across Wales' 22 and £1,662 across Scotland's 32 (Scottish figures exclude water and sewerage). The highest Band D in England is £2,765.02 (Dorset) and the lowest £1,028.21 (Wandsworth). Every other band is a fixed statutory fraction of Band D — full tables below. Sources: MHCLG, Welsh Government, gov.scot official releases (OGL v3.0); rates last verified 4 July 2026.

These are area-level tables, not your home's band. A specific property's band is on the official register only: check the exact band free on the VOA register → (England & Wales) or the Scottish Assessors portal (Scotland).

How every band is worked out from Band D

Councils publish one number — the Band D charge — and every other band is a fixed proportion of it, set in law. In England (Local Government Finance Act 1992, s.5) and Wales (Council Tax (Valuation Bands) (Wales) Order 2003) the proportions run from 6/9 of Band D for Band A up to 18/9 for Band H, with Wales adding Band I at 21/9. Scotland kept the 6/9–9/9 ladder for bands A–D but raised the multipliers for E–H from April 2017 (Council Tax (Substitution of Proportion) (Scotland) Order 2016): Band E is 473/360 of Band D and Band H is 882/360. Our tables apply exactly these proportions to each council's official Band D figure.

Buying a house? The band tells you the tax — not whether the house is a good buy.

Council tax is one line in the running costs. It won't tell you if the property floods, sits over old coal workings, has a poor EPC, or sold for £40k less last year. The HouseCheckup Complete report puts council tax context alongside 15+ checks on the specific address, all from official sources — £24.99 one-off, no subscription. Human-checked and emailed to you as a PDF.

Conveyancing search packs cost £250–£450 and a RICS survey £400–£1,500 — this is the £24.99 first look before you spend that. Data: VOA · MHCLG · Environment Agency · HM Land Registry · police.uk — Open Government Licence v3.0.

Band D is the total area charge for a two-adult dwelling (council + adult social care + police + fire + average parish precepts), so an individual bill varies slightly by parish. Band D is the published official figure (MHCLG, Council Tax levels set by local authorities in England 2026 to 2027 (Table 9)); other bands are derived from the statutory proportions and rounded to the nearest pound, so your bill statement may differ by pence. Annual charges for 2026/27; rates last verified 4 July 2026.

Figures EXCLUDE water and sewerage charges, which appear on the same bill but are set by Scottish Water — a real Scottish bill is higher than the council tax figure shown. Band D is the published official figure (Scottish Government, Council Tax datasets — Band D rates by year (2026-27)); other bands are derived from the statutory proportions and rounded to the nearest pound, so your bill statement may differ by pence. Annual charges for 2026/27; rates last verified 4 July 2026.

Think your own band is too high?

Don't guess — a challenge is a reassessment, and bands can move UP as well as down. Run the two evidence checks first: our step-by-step guide to challenging a council tax band covers the neighbours check, the 1991 valuation method, and the evidence the VOA accepts. Challenging is free via the VOA — never pay anyone just to submit one.

What these tables cannot tell you

  • • A specific home's band — that's the VOA register (England & Wales) or Scottish Assessors (Scotland), linked above.
  • • Your actual bill after parish/community precepts, the 25% single-person discount, council tax support, or empty-home and second-home premiums.
  • • Whether a band challenge would succeed — outcomes depend on evidence the VOA reviews case by case.
  • • Scottish water and sewerage charges, which are billed with council tax but set separately by Scottish Water.

Methodology and sources

Band D figures for all 350 billing authorities are parsed directly from the official machine-readable 2026/27 releases — nothing is hand-typed: England from MHCLG's “Council Tax levels set by local authorities in England 2026 to 2027” (Table 9, the area charge for a two-adult dwelling); Wales from the Welsh Government's “Council Tax levels: April 2026 to March 2027” (Table 1, overall average Band D); Scotland from the Scottish Government's Council Tax datasets (Band D by year, 2026-27 column). Bands other than D are derived using the statutory proportions cited above and rounded to the nearest pound. All sources are published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Rates last verified 4 July 2026; the tables are re-ingested each April when the new financial-year releases land.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on your council and your band. Across the 296 English billing authorities the unweighted average Band D charge for 2026/27 is £2,411; Wales averages £2,326 and Scotland £1,662 (Scottish figures exclude water and sewerage). Every other band is a fixed statutory fraction of Band D — the full A–H tables for every council are on this page. Sources: MHCLG, Welsh Government and Scottish Government official 2026/27 releases, Open Government Licence v3.0.
This page can't tell you that — and neither can any postcode tool, honestly. A home's exact band is on the official register: the VOA's 'Check your Council Tax band' service for England and Wales, or the Scottish Assessors portal for Scotland, both free. Our council tax checker shows the band MIX in your postcode area and what each band costs, then links you to the register for the exact band.
Bands are based on historic valuations: what the property would have sold for on 1 April 1991 in England and Scotland, or 1 April 2003 in Wales (which re-valued and added Band I). Each band then pays a fixed statutory proportion of the Band D charge — in England and Wales 6/9 (Band A) up to 18/9 (Band H, 21/9 for Wales' Band I); Scotland uses higher multipliers for bands E–H (473/360 to 882/360) since April 2017.
These are the standard two-adult charges for each billing authority area. Your own bill can differ because of parish or community precepts (the English and Welsh figures include an area average), the 25% single-person discount, council tax support schemes, student or other exemptions, and empty-home or second-home premiums. In Scotland, water and sewerage charges are added to the same bill.
In our tables of official 2026/27 figures, the highest Band D charge in England is £2,765.02 (Dorset) and the lowest is £1,028.21 (Wandsworth). In Wales the range is £2,013.18 (Cardiff) to £2,593.60 (Merthyr Tydfil); in Scotland £1,468.47 (South Lanarkshire) to £1,816.16 (Midlothian, excluding water and sewerage).
No. Northern Ireland uses domestic rates instead of council tax — a rate poundage applied to a property's capital value, administered by Land & Property Services. That's why there are no Northern Ireland rows in these tables.
Yes, via the VOA (England and Wales) or your local assessor (Scotland) — and it's free, so never pay anyone just to submit one. Be aware a challenge is a reassessment: your band, or your neighbours', can go UP as well as down. Run the two evidence checks first — our step-by-step guide to challenging a council tax band covers the neighbours check, the 1991 valuation check, and what evidence the VOA accepts.
Yes — it's a running cost that compounds every year you own the home. In many councils the difference between two adjacent bands is £200–£400 a year at these rates, so band should sit alongside price, energy costs and risk checks when you compare properties. Council tax context is one of the checks in the HouseCheckup Complete report.
