Quick answer

The GOV.UK Check your Council Tax band service looks up any property's band free by postcode. In England and Wales it uses the Valuation Office Agency (VOA); in Scotland it directs you to the Scottish Assessors. It tells you the band, but not the 1991 valuation behind it, the comparable properties used, or the actual bill.

How the checker works

  1. 1. Go to gov.uk/council-tax-bands and enter the postcode.
  2. 2. Select the address from the list.
  3. 3. Read the band: A–H in England, A–I in Wales, A–H in Scotland. In England and Wales the data is the VOA register; a Scottish postcode routes to the Scottish Assessors' own service.

What it won't show you

  • • Why you're in that band. Bands are based on the property's estimated value on 1 April 1991 (England & Scotland) or 1 April 2003 (Wales), not today's value. The checker shows the band, not that underlying valuation.
  • • The comparables. It won't show the properties or evidence the VOA used, which is exactly what you need if you suspect your band is wrong.
  • • How your band compares next door. To spot a banding anomaly you have to look up neighbouring properties one by one, because the checker doesn't surface the comparison for you.
  • • The actual bill. The band isn't the charge. Your annual bill depends on your council's rate for the band plus any discounts (single-person, disregards, exemptions).

If you think your band is wrong

You can ask the VOA (England and Wales) or the Assessor (Scotland) to review your band, and there's no fee to ask. Build the case first: use the checker to note the bands of similar neighbouring homes, and, where you have it, evidence of the property's value around the 1991/2003 valuation date. Is there a GOV.UK council tax band checker?
Yes. GOV.UK's 'Check your Council Tax band' service lets you look up any property's band free by postcode. For England and Wales it uses the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) register; for Scotland it directs you to the Scottish Assessors Association (SAA). It's the official, authoritative source for a property's band.
How do I check my council tax band?

What does the GOV.UK band checker not show?
It shows the band, but not why your property is in it. It won't reveal the 1991 (England/Scotland) or 2003 (Wales) valuation the band is based on, the comparable properties used, or how your band compares to similar homes near you. It also doesn't tell you the actual annual charge, which depends on your council and any discounts.
How is a council tax band decided?
Bands are set by the VOA (England and Wales) or Scottish Assessors, based on what the property would have sold for on a fixed valuation date: 1 April 1991 in England and Scotland, 1 April 2003 in Wales. It's the property's estimated value on that date, not today's value, that determines the band.
Can I challenge my council tax band?
Yes, if you think it's wrong: for example, if similar neighbouring properties are in a lower band, or the property has materially changed. You challenge through the VOA in England and Wales (or the Assessor in Scotland). Gather evidence first: comparable bands from the checker and, where relevant, 1991 sale-price evidence. There's no fee to ask the VOA to review.
